Asian Artists’ "Sentiment" Group Exhibition Links Multiculturalism and Epidemic Experiences - Anita Yen, World Journal

亞裔藝術家「情緒」聯展 連結多元文化與疫情體驗 - 世界日報 顏嘉瑩

During the covid epidemic, people stayed at home to avoid the epidemic, and artists were also locked at home to create, bringing different works from the past in a deeper way and different perspectives; in Manhattan Chinatown, eight Asian artists held a group exhibition, "Sentiment". The Taiwanese artist Chemin Hsiao combined the masks, used for epidemic prevention, with his childhood memories to create unique works that not only have a personal style, but also connect with the viewer.

新冠肺炎疫情期間民眾居家避疫，藝術家們也關在家創作，以更深層的方式和不同的審視 角度帶來以往不同的作品;在曼哈頓華埠，八名亞裔藝術家舉辦「情緒」(Sentiment)合 展，其中台裔藝術家蕭喆旻，將防疫用的又罩與自己童年的記憶結合，創作出既帶有個人 風格，又能與觀者產生連結的獨特作品。

The curator Sophia Chizuco, a Japanese descent, said that during the epidemic, each artist entered a deeper level of thinking to examine and create. The eight Asian artists participating this time, due to their respective cultural backgrounds, had different perspectives. The circumstances also allowed everyone to create in addition to express the current epidemic situation, but also to create at the level of personal emotions and cultural thoughts, bringing a different look to the work.

此次策展人日裔Sophia Chizuco表示，在疫情期間，每個藝術家都進入更深層次的思想來 審視及創作，此次參與的八名亞裔藝術家，由於各自的文化背景，在疫期分別有不同觀 點，也讓每個人的創作除表現疫情當下外，更能在個人情感及文化思想等層面創作，為作 品帶來不同面貌。

Chemin Hsiao, who participated in the exhibition, said that due to the hatred and discrimination against Asian communities caused by the epidemic, the organizers also hope that through this exhibition, they will raise the attention of the outside world to Asians and express their feelings during the epidemic.

Hsiao created nearly 50 works during the epidemic, and five paintings are selected for the exhibition. He said that due to the pandemic, he spent more time at home and more time to think about the situation. He then combined the symbol of "mask," which is for epidemic prevention, with his childhood memories related to “peace.”

One of the paintings described "cutting hair." (Barber Shop). The person in the painting was unable to go out to get a haircut during the epidemic, resulting in very long hair. Hsiao incorporated the watercolors of plants, which he used to paint in his work, and the unique barbershop rotating lamps, full of Taiwanese flavor, also appear in the paintings, bringing some sense of humor to the boring days of avoiding epidemics at home.

The artist Lulu Meng, also from Taiwan, thinks about the balance between uniqueness and group belonging through her works. In addition, the participating artists include Korean, Filipino, and Thai.
