I believe that any form of art is a species of exploration and transgression. ... Art by its nature is a transgressive act, and artists must accept being punished for it. The more original and unsettling their art, the more devastating the punishment.
Joyce Carol Oates
This group show, organized by Rick Krieger and Jim Furlong will examine the notion of transgression in art. Apart from the depiction of beautiful images of nature and humanity throughout history, art has also served to provoke, criticize and mock tradition. Goya’s prints depicting the horrors of war; Dali’s moustache on the Mona Lisa; Duchamp’s urinal as a work of sculpture are just a few of the examples of the ways that transgression can inform visual art. This show will include political art, cartoons, and other examples of irreverence – i.e. attempts to break free from the restraints of traditionalism and conformist thought.
